Have you ever wondered how a school can inspire creativity while celebrating cultural diversity? At Academia de Mi Abuela (AMA), we believe the answer lies in blending rich cultural traditions with innovative learning experiences. We strive to create an environment where students not only thrive academically but also learn to appreciate the world around them.
A Curriculum That Celebrates Cultural Diversity
At AMA, learning goes far beyond traditional academics. Our students are immersed in a bilingual environment and constantly exposed to the richness of Spanish and English. We use music, art, and performance to help students connect with the broader community, bringing the beauty of various cultures into the classroom.
Our curriculum is built around the idea that children learn best when they are engaged in meaningful activities that reflect the world they live in. This means that every day at AMA is an opportunity to learn about different traditions, languages, and cultural practices. Our students not only learn Spanish but also develop a deep understanding of Xicano culture through dance, music, and visual arts. These experiences help children appreciate cultural diversity, which fosters empathy, understanding, and respect for others.
Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds: The AMA Organic Salad Bar
In addition to nurturing students’ minds, we also focus on their physical well-being. At AMA, we understand the importance of healthy eating in a child’s development, which is why we are proud to offer an organic salad bar featuring fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Our commitment to providing nutritious meals ensures that students have the energy and focus they need to succeed in the classroom.
By including fresh, organic ingredients, we teach children the value of healthy eating habits early in life. The salad bar is a hit with our students, and it’s another way we bring the community together—parents, teachers, and students all share the joy of eating well and staying healthy.
Winter Performance: Creativity in Action
One of the highlights of our year is the upcoming Winter Show in December, where our students get to showcase their talents and creative ideas. This year, we are thrilled to partner with students from Met West, bringing fresh, exciting perspectives to our program. These talented young people have some incredible ideas, including forming a Rock Mariachi Band that blends traditional music with a modern twist. It’s a fantastic example of how AMA embraces innovation while honoring cultural roots.
But that’s not all—our students are also collaborating on a unique fashion show for puppets designed entirely by them. The creativity pouring from these young minds is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see how it all comes together on stage. We love working with young people because they bring the best ideas, and this year’s performance promises to be unforgettable.
The Benefits of Performing Arts and Music in Education
At AMA, the arts are an essential part of a well-rounded education. Engaging in music, dance, and theater not only helps children develop their creativity but also improves their communication and social skills. Performances like our Winter Show allow students to express themselves in new ways and build confidence in front of an audience.
Through our culturally reflective curriculum, we teach students about different musical traditions, encouraging them to explore their cultural identities and learn about others. This intercultural learning environment helps children connect with their peers and develop a deeper appreciation for diversity. These lessons in empathy and cooperation extend beyond the classroom, enriching the entire community.
Family Engagement: Learning Together as a Community
We know that a child’s education doesn’t stop when they leave school for the day. At AMA, we strive to involve families in the learning process as much as possible. We view parents as partners in education, and we encourage family units to be part of the AMA community.
One way we do this is through events like the Winter Show, where parents are invited to experience the incredible work their children have been doing. These events allow families to come together, celebrate their children’s achievements, and learn more about the diverse cultures represented in our school.
By encouraging strong relationships between students, parents, and teachers, we create a supportive environment where everyone is invested in each child’s success.
The Joy of Learning at AMA
At Academia de Mi Abuela, we are more than just a school—we are a community that celebrates learning, creativity, and cultural diversity. Our students thrive in an environment that encourages them to explore their interests, develop a love of learning, and build lasting connections with their peers.
From our healthy organic salad bar to our enriching performing arts program, everything we do is designed to support the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. We believe that when children are engaged in meaningful, culturally reflective activities, they are not only more successful in school but also more prepared for the world around them.
